"I must be a mermaid, Rango. I have no fear of depths and a great fear of shallow living."
- Anaïs Nin

Herkimer Diamond, Lariat Sea Ox

My name is Emily Rayow, and I have been creating for as long as I have been alive.

My early days found me painting wild expressionistic artworks. Eventually a deep love of stones and the natural world led me to begin creating adornments - it all began with handmade leather cuff bracelets. These days, I can be found inventing new, wild ways to wear crystals on the body (crowns and belly chains I'm looking at you), playing with paint, clay, natural dye + pigment, deepening my herbalism practice and expanding the apothecary, or (most likely) playing with my two babies on our wild sprawl of land in upstate New York.
Art in any form has always been my calling - in a way I never even had to question but just intuitively knew since birth, and remains my supreme joy in life.. be it paint on the fingertips, herbs in the kettle, or stones on the body.

What is a Sea Ox…?

I grew up in Florida, in love with the sea. I dreamt of meeting mythical creatures, awakened from centuries of slumber to find me.. Sea Ox is also a reference to my maiden name, Cox, and the decades of spelling it out audibly ("See-Oh-Ex") in order to avoid inappropriate misspellings. So, part homage, part humor.

A Way to Wear the Earth

My love for stones and jewelry came from all the women in my family. I can vividly recall being a young girl and opening my grandmother's drawers of costume jewelry as if they were in a vault at the national museum. Pewter and plastic might well have been Mayan gold and Rubies for all the wonder and enchantment they filled me with.
A desire to decorate myself wildly emerged at a young age.

Art, Ritual, Life

My goal, as an artist and a mother and a human being walking around on this earth,  is to affect as many aspects of life with an artistic a sensibility as possible. Make it beautiful. Make it unique. Make it bold.

Wear that crystal, and feel the energy entering your pores. Meditate on it. Allow it to empower you, enliven you. Feel your third eye.. feel your feet sinking into the soil. Remember you are alive, stunningly & breathtakingly - and accessorize accordingly.
