Star Ruby, in particular, forms in only one out of one hundred rough stones. The phenomenon is created when a drop of water is encapsulated in the corundum mineral, the result being this play of light on rutile fibers running through the stone. Ancient lore says they were created when a sunbeam fell in love with a star.
